Welcome

Liberton Terrace Co-op Housing was an idea whose time had come! It fulfilled a long-standing need for attractive and reasonably priced housing in St. Albert, Alberta. The co-operative was founded in 1986 by a group of people needing affordable housing while keeping up with the aesthetics expected in St. Albert. The project began with an interest survey and the assistance of the various levels of government and the community. A housing co-operative consulting group (Communitas, Inc.) worked with the founding families to help the co-operative become a reality.

Liberton Terrace Housing Co-operative Ltd. was incorporated on July 1, 1986 and construction began in 1987. Members had input into the design and development of the co-operative and in the development of a community within a community here in the heart of St. Albert.

In order to provide needed assistance to many family units whose resources are stretched to the limit, 50% of the 43 units are subsidized. The Co-op has created 7 wheelchair accessible units for physically and mentally challenged individuals which enables their independence. Furthermore, it facilitates the involvement of all members in the daily operations of this unique community concept. This is a community composed of a mixture of traditional families, single-parent families, individuals, and retirees - a situation which is encouraged by the absence of a family income limit in the co-operative. One of the objectives of the co-operative has been to create an integrated community.
